A Banner Year For Hydrangeas

Their season is ending, but we have to write this down as the year of the hydrangea. Right and left, and everywhere we turned, hydrangeas were bursting with blooms in a way we'd never seen before! But what's behind this stunning display?

Let's pause before we get to the gorgeous blooms I witnessed during early morning walks around the neighborhood with Louie, our Yorkshire Terrier. I love our morning routine when we get to enjoy the fresh air, that blast of sunlight, and the summer warmth rising with each step. 

Holding the leash with one hand and the phone on the other, I go around the place, saving memories that will make me smile for years. 

My focus this time: Those gorgeous hydrangea blooms!

These first pictures were the last taken, as the Limelight Hydrangeas are now putting on a tremendous show.

The secret to this stunning display lies in the weather! 

Most hydrangeas set their flower buds in the fall for the following summer's blooms. So, if last winter was mild with minimal frost, those precious buds were more likely to survive unscathed.

Here's a breakdown of the weather's role:

• Mild Winter: A gentle winter with consistent temperatures protects the delicate flower buds from getting damaged.
• Spring Showers: Consistent spring rain provides the perfect amount of moisture to help the buds develop into full, showy blooms.

These ideal conditions allowed the hydrangeas to put all their energy into producing an abundance of beautiful flowers.

Again, these colorful clusters are weather-dependent; a mild winter makes a difference in the following summer.

I find them absolutely beautiful when framing the way to the entrance door!

Of course, even with perfect weather, a little care goes a long way. 

Regular watering, proper pruning at the right time (avoid pruning in fall or winter for most varieties!), and feeding your hydrangeas with an appropriate fertilizer can all contribute to a spectacular bloom season.
