Five Simple Ways to Decorate Your First Apartment on a Budget

Furnishing an apartment can be a daunting task, especially if you are on a limited budget.
However, with careful planning and some creativity, it is possible to create a stylish and comfortable space without breaking the bank.

My previous post was the reveal of my daughter's apartment, a task I took into my own hands to help my daughter in the difficult transition from leaving her parent's home and moving to an empty space she was calling home. Well, it's not empty anymore, as you can see right here.

Today I'm sharing five simple ways to furnish and decorate an apartment on a limited budget.
Although, the very first step is to create a budget. You should determine how much you can afford to spend on furniture/decor and stick to that budget. With that budget at hand, you can start shopping for your pieces.

It's crucial to prioritize your needs. Focus on purchasing essential items first, such as a bed, a sofa, and a dining table. These items will provide the basic functionality needed in your apartment. Once you have these essential items in place, you can start thinking about adding decorative pieces, such as accent chairs, rugs, and artwork.

Here are 5 simple ways to decorate/furnish an apartment on a budget:

1. MAKE USE OF WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE

Before you go shopping, take a look around your apartment/home and see what furniture and decor you already have. You may be surprised at how much you can use. If you have any furniture that is in good condition but doesn't fit your style, you can sell it or donate it.

Ask for help from friends and family. They may be able to give you furniture, decor, or even labor!

Most of our decor pieces came from our own basement, as I've accumulated a great deal of decor as a blogger.

2. SHOP AT THRIFT STORES, GARAGE SALES, AND ONLINE COMMUNITIES

Thrift stores and garage sales are great places to find affordable furniture and decor. You can often find unique and stylish items you won't find anywhere else.

However, my main focus was finding those furnishings online, more precisely at Facebook Marketplace. Traveling over an hour from home to my daughter's apartment was enough. Finding those furnishing was done while in the comforts of my own home.

What did I get from Marketplace?

A sofa, a dining table + chairs, a coffee table & storage shelves,

Choose multi-functional furniture. Pieces that can serve multiple purposes can help you to save space and money. For example, you could choose a sofa that can also serve as a bed or a coffee table that can also serve as a storage unit.

3. GET INTO DIY PROJECTS

This is a great way to save money and get exactly what you want. You can make your own furniture if you have some basic woodworking skills. Many online tutorials can show you how to make simple furniture pieces.

Even if you're on a budget, it's important to choose furniture and decor that you love. This will make your apartment feel more like home.

4. GET CREATIVE WITH PAINT/COLOR

I know, I know! Most apartments are prohibited from touching those walls, but hey, there are still ways to use paint or color to change the look of a room without spending a lot of money.

We created a colorful gallery wall & repurposed a set of canvases. Both DIY projects gave the entire apartment a totally new atmosphere.

How about using peel & stick wallpaper?

No peel & stick wallpaper allowed?

I know. That was our case. But we still found a way to use it! :D

Not sure about what colors to choose? Many online resources can help you find the perfect color scheme for your apartment.

5. ADD PERSONAL TOUCHES

Decorate your apartment with personal touches, such as photos, artwork, and plants. This will make your apartment feel more like your own.

Use mirrors and rugs. Mirrors and rugs can make a small apartment feel larger and more spacious. They can also add a touch of luxury to any space.

Plants are a great way to add life and color to your apartment. They also help to improve the air quality. If you don't have a green thumb, there are many low-maintenance plants that you can choose from.

Following these tips will help you decorate your apartment on a budget. With a bit of creativity and effort, you can create a beautiful and stylish home that you'll love.
