I'm usually off for the weekend, but today I wanted to share with you this scene I captured earlier this week of a flock of birds perched on power lines taking a little break during their journey heading south.
These pictures and video
were taking in Frederick, MD about 20 minutes away from where I live. That evening I had to go there to Frederick to pick up an item that was only available at the Home Depot in that location.
I went in and out of the store and into my car. Rolled down the window because the weather was gorgeous and that's when I heard the roar.
I looked the other way and there they were perched on the power lines... Hundreds of little birds!
Here's the small video:
I drove the car to get closer to the power lines and started recording... waiting for them to fly.
Ha, it didn't take long.
What an incredible sight!
The quick answer: Electricity is lazy. It always takes the easiest route! It always travels from highest potential to lowest potential, always taking the easiest path. The birds offer a lot of resistance to the electricity traveling down those wires, so the electricity prefers traveling down the wires because is an easier route than passing through the birds.
As long as the birds don't touch anything else, like another power cable or the ground, they will continue to sit up there.
For humans is the same way, but we're usually connected to the ground when we touch a power cable, even on a ladder, electricity would flow from the cable to the human and into the ground, giving the human a big shock!
Interesting isn't it!
Well, Fall is almost here and these guys certainly know what to do!

Did you ever see the old Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds?" Really reminds me of that movie- almost kinda scary. Thanks for taking the time to get some great pics.
ReplyDeleteHaha yep. That was the first thing my husband said when I showed him the video. It was a scary movie for him.
