The ending and start of a new season mean that is time to swap out a lot of things around the house. From food to clothing to tools and decor, it is time to collect and store a few of those seasonal elements and bring out and display a good bunch of others.
This post is all about collecting and storing all the seasonal decor, and since I already went through it, I'm sharing with you some simple tips and ideas that you might find helpful when you get to go through this task.
Taking down and organizing the Fall/Halloween decor was the job I was doing on November first.
Not having to host Thanksgiving meant I could go ahead and pack everything up.
If you still have some Fall decor out there, don't worry, this goes fast and you're going to end up with a clean canvas to start on your holiday decor!

This brings me to the very first tip:
1. ORGANIZE YOUR HOLIDAY DECOR THE DAY YOU'RE TAKING IT OFF
Once you decide to bring down all those decorations, you should also set time aside to organize not only the items you're taking off but also the ones you didn't use.
2. GROUP THE DECOR BY CATEGORIES
Use one room to work on this project. There, as you bring the decor you're taking off, make small piles of look-alike items... soft pumpkins, big pumpkins, leaves, signs, costumes, etc.
Don't forget to also sort out the stuff you didn't use this year! Get it out of those boxes and check what's in there. I was surprised to find some of the costumes my kids used when they were little! 🤪
3. GO THROUGH EACH PILE DOING A THREE-WAY SORTING: DAMAGE - DONATE - KEEP
Yes, you're going to find items you didn't even know you had! You're also going to notice all the stuff you haven't used in years.
This picture below is the stuff I had, that I don't think of using anymore, so of course, all that went to the donation center.
Get rid of stuff that's damaged beyond repair.
4. USE CLEAR PLASTIC BAGS AND STACKABLE CONTAINERS
Small groupings of holiday decorations can be neatly organized in Ziplock plastic bags.
Do NOT use bags where you cannot see what's inside!
5. STORE YOUR PAPER GOODS
I like paper goods/decorations because they make a good visual impact when in use and they don't take much storage space when it's time to save them for next year.
All those wall/windows cling decorations can be used for many years when properly stored.
I attach the sticky figures to both sides of the plastic sheet protectors.
I save regular paper decor inside a Ziplock bag and then everything is placed inside a file folder.
6. ADD LABELS
Even though you're using clear plastic bags and containers, sometimes those items we're storing don't make any sense when you're looking at them from the outside, especially a year after you stored them!
Write down what's that thing you have in there!
Designate a spot in your home where to store this holiday decor stash. If you have a basement, that's a good spot for holiday decor that's usually used once a year.
I have to warn you about using a big cardboard box to store seasonal decor: That really sucks!!
The items at the bottom of the box are buried for life. Don't do it!
My recommendation is for you to use a shelf.
I ditched that box and brought most of the decor here to that base cabinet in my family room:
8. STORE EVERYTHING WITH GOOD ACCESSIBILITY
You took the time to sort your decor and place it nicely in bags. Well, bags don't really have a nice structure to them and in no time they're going to be sagging in the bottom of the cabinet. You can use another plastic container to organize them, but a simple cardboard box would do the trick too.
This is so true. Yes, try to keep everything within one layer, no storing on the back of containers or boxes.
10. FIND CREATIVE WAYS TO STORE THOSE BIG DECOR ITEMS
Corralling those big pumpkins inside this mesh has worked nicely for me. They don't take up needed space hanging there from the ceiling joists in the basement. And since I always use pumpkins in my decor there's no way I'm not going to forget to use them.
Well, this is how this base cabinet looks now, storing almost all of my Fall decor. I was also able to bring in those rustic placemats that I almost always use during Fall.
And hey, since I was in a big organization mode... Some of the items I took out of that base cabinet were brought in here to this top cabinet, but of course, I had to re-organized everything.
