It's hard to believe how a simple gallon of paint can make such a HUGE difference in the look and feel of a room, but that's true. Picking a dark, moody color as the backdrop for this room was the key to the success of this makeover.
If you have a paint project in mind, go for it! Fall is the perfect time to spruce up your home and you can save $10 off 1 gallon / $40 off 3 and 5 gallons during the BEHR Paint Labor Day promotion.
Guess what? You might be in luck today because I'm hosting a "Spruce up your home for Fall" giveaway and two of you might be the lucky winners of one $150 Home Depot Gift card. Keep on reading and enter to win at the end of the post!
For now, let's continue with this bedroom transformation. This is how this space looked a few weeks ago... A pretty shabby room, that I started updating a long time ago with faux ceiling beams and a built-in.
However, at that time I didn't have the budget to finish the room and all the decor pieces I used were hand-me-downs and free Craiglist scores like the screen/headboard.

You can check this post HERE for some more before pictures, a little bit about the plans I had in mind, and the work I went through to bring this room to the blank slate you see below. Oh, that Werner ladder was right there by my side the whole time, the only one that could reach that highest point.

The next step was to install a wooden design on this wall. As I told you in my previous post, that high elevation was driving me a bit crazy, but hey, it was done and I'm very happy at how it turned out.

Once the wall design was in place, I had to decide what color to paint it.
Since the beginning of this makeover, I knew I wanted a dark, moody color on this wall.
Adios adios, Blanco! 👋
Adios adios, Blanco! 👋
If you're like me, where most of your home is like a white canvas, you might feel the pressure when trying to find a dark color to paint a wall.
Well, fear no more!
I logged onto Home Depot and in the paint section downloaded this Project Color app to pick my perfect shade.
Once installed, you can match colors, check for popular colors, find your perfect color by shade, or just by browsing the many shades by the many different brands they carry.
LOVE the option of seeing the color in my own space!
Yep. You just click there where the arrow is pointing to take a picture of your room, or you can also use a picture you already have. Then, you just paint your walls there on the app and decide what colors you like best!
Oh, you can also order samples or buy the paint right there from the app.
Let me tell you, I tried so. many. colors!
In the end, I narrowed them down to only four. I ordered the samples, which came with free delivery. 😉 As soon as they arrived I tested them on the wall.
- Behr Dark Secret
- Behr Evening Hush
- Behr Graphic Charcoal
- Behr Astronomical
That last color was checked off immediately... too greenish.
Graphic Charcoal is a color I like a lot, but for this wall, it wasn't dark enough.
Dark Secret and Evening Hush were the two colors I liked the most and in the end, I went with Evening Hush because it was just perfect! Dark but not too dark.
The new online experience makes designing, finding, and buying your paint project easier.

I used my Wagner Flexio 2000 sprayer after protecting all the areas I didn't want paint on. It all went really fast and the end result is simply gorgeous! More details about the painting of this wall are right HERE.

Guys, it was time to fill this room with pretty things...
BOOM!
BOOM!
A gorgeous chandelier, a comfy and stylish bed, a rug...
| Baxton Studio Platform Bed | NuLoom Sherill Grey area rug | |
I needed everything!
And guess what? I found EVERYTHING you see in this room at The Home Depot. Well, everything minus Don Quijote and the hanging planter!
| Studio White Euro Sham | Jean Pierre Faux-Fur Blush Pillows | Vivian Poly Euro Pillow | |
The soft linens, the pillow inserts, the wood on the wall, the plants, and the blackout velvety curtains that I love so much, are all found in the same spot. How awesome is that?!
I shared on my Insta-stories how fun it was to get out of Home Depot with a bed, some lumber pieces, and screws in my shopping cart. :D
| Sand Wash King Comforter | Doublewide Blackout Velvet Curtains | PomPom Knit Throw | |
I went for a Mid-century modern look and this bed with those cute legs couldn't fit any better.
My husband's vintage camera collection is on display and my DIY camera wall art adorns the mantel.
| Jute Basket | |
I'm still in that phase where I can't believe this is my room! I love it.
All the tinkering about the wall design is a thing of the past. Keeping that high elevation simple was the way to go.
| Chandelier | Alvar Black Sconce | |
The hanging planter, an easy and last-minute up-cycle, creates balance to that area up there.
| Hanging Planter | |
You can find complete details about the DIY - nightstands right HERE.
| Alvar Black Sconce | Down Feather Blend Cotton White Comforter | |
I had never had leg-less or lamp-less nightstands and they sure are game-changers! It's so easy to vacuum that area below and keep the top organized.
And look at that walnut finish. ❤️ Don Quijote is too busy to see it... He's just looking for those windmills. :)
Well, guys, that's it. I hope you have liked this makeover and hopefully gotten a few ideas from it to incorporate into your own home.

DeleteSuch a beautiful room you have created! I love it so much! I am currently painting an entire farmhouse that we are building (interiors only) and am paralyzed by all of the choices I need to make. Can't wait to try the tips you mentioned!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ashleigh! You should definitely check the Color App. You find or match a color, see it in the room and they also give you a color palette that goes with that selection you just made. It sure gives you confidence!

ReplyDeleteI like bright rooms and that was precisely one of my concerns when i first thought about a dark wall. It does lower its brightness specially when the sun begins to fade. But hey, that's when I can turn on that pretty chandelier! ;) Thanks so much Cathy!

ReplyDeleteHa they did it backwards! 🤪 I'm sure you're gonna be a pro by the time you finish repairing those plaster walls. Is it too difficult?
