However, I have to take you back to when I was building the base cabinets, it was at this precise moment when I thought I wasn't going to finish this project before the Holidays if I also had to build the doors.
Well, I also remembered how it took me a complete year to build the doors for the cabinets in the dining room.
Yep. The building of doors is not my specialty. 🤨
And that's when I reached out to my friends at Fast Cabinet Doors. They are the pros building doors and fast!
And that's when I reached out to my friends at Fast Cabinet Doors. They are the pros building doors and fast!
I gave them the dimensions for all of the doors I needed for this project and within two weeks of placing my order, this guy brought this huge package to my front door.
My doors arrived unscathed. They were packed very well, with lots of extra pieces of cardboard. And hey, the cardboard was reused during the painting process. ;)
I ordered my doors with bore holes and hinges, so yes, I received this big package of hinges to install.
As soon as I unpacked the doors I brought them to the family room to see how they fit/look on the cabinets. 😍😍😍
Since I knew I was going to paint them, I ordered the paint-grade hardwood with MDF panel- Shaker-style doors.
They were super smooth and ready for paint.
However, I went ahead and installed them, and luckily I found out I had ordered the wrong hinges. I got the 1/2" inch overlay hinges, but I needed the 3/4" overlay. I built the cabinets without a face frame and I was going for the inset cabinet door look.
That rookie mistake with the hinges was one of the reasons I couldn't finish the entire project before the holidays.
While the new hinges arrived, I painted the doors. I started this job inside the room, with a paintbrush and a roller, painting the inside of the doors and smoothing out the roller texture with a paintbrush.
But oh my goodness, this was so time-consuming!
So much so that I decided to bring all the doors outside to the garage and spray paint them with my Wagner paint sprayer. Such a huge relief.
14 doors, and 9 shelves on both sides, they were all painted twice. In between coats I used a 220-grid sanding sponge to smooth out the surfaces.
The new hinges arrived, the doors were hung and this project was checked off my to-do list!
And to tell you the truth, I can't believe this space is now mine!!
It's a world of difference from what was my norm! 😝
Remember how messy those cabinets looked during the holidays when the kids were here?? The doors finally turned that messy room into this tranquil and collected space!
Though, I had to start organizing all my pretties! Well, this left tower is now holding kitchenware. All these items were sentenced to the basement, which was a pain having to go down there every time I needed them.
Ha, not anymore! And I love that the doors keep all the mess hidden!
Adding those long doors to both end shelves was one of the best decisions ever! They hold tons of stuff.
On the other end cabinet, I'm storing decorative items, but I'm showing you all those changes in an upcoming post.
I can't stop admiring those doors and well, the entire building!
And here are my very best tips if you're thinking about changing those old cabinet doors you have in the kitchen or don't want to build the doors for your latest DIY project:
Well, there you have it! This part of my family room is now complete. I need to go and put the other side of the room together, but first I need to bring Louie, my little helper to the hair salon. ;)
And as promised, here are all the links to the built-ins and family room work:

And here are my very best tips if you're thinking about changing those old cabinet doors you have in the kitchen or don't want to build the doors for your latest DIY project:
- Measure twice, order once! Good measuring is perhaps, the most important thing when ordering your doors. I followed all the instructions Fast Cabinet Doors have on their website to get a perfect fit. If you are replacing the doors, it's even easier, just measure those doors.
- Decide what type of door you want. Fast Cabinet Doors has an extensive collection of custom-made cabinet doors in a variety of high-quality wood species and styles including inset, solid, and raised panel doors. All doors are sold as unfinished wood, pre-sanded, and ready to be painted or stained upon arrival.
- Bores or no bores? Fast Cabinet Doors gives you the option of doors with or without boreholes to set the hinges for a small fee.
- Determine what type of hinge is the one you need for your doors. This is something many do-it-yourself's don't pay much attention to (me included), but it's so important due to the many different types of doors. Here's a great guide for choosing the right hinge for your project.

However, all opinions are completely my own based on my experience.
So impressed by both the cabinet and your skills. A beautiful addition to the room.
ReplyDeleteAww you're so very kind, thanks so much, Cyndi! Oh, we were in desperate need of storage in this room and I think this unit fits the bill. ;)
DeleteYou do the best work and I had to show my husband what you can do as it blows my mind. Those look fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Kim! I know your husband is a great maker, builder, and he could whip something like this in no time if needed. Say hi to him. 🖐️
DeleteThese are oh so fabulous! Thrilled for you!!! Please come to my house... XOXO
ReplyDeleteHehe On my way there! Thanks Susie!
DeleteOh my word, this is so beautiful and so fabulous. Wow, you are amazing.
ReplyDeleteMarty, you're the best cheerleader! Thanks so much for your kindness and your continued support! 😘
DeleteAMAZING -- you are one gifted/talented woman. It is beautiful and a great improvement for your room. Love the pictures of Louie -- especially the one helping you while on the step stool!
ReplyDeleteThanks!! We sure are enjoying all that storage space. Louie is such a riot, he's always one step in front or behind me, I know, big help! :D
DeleteIt's hard to believe that you started with a pile of wood and ended up with this AMAZING piece. My skills extend to putting a small box together for table decor (and I call my style rustic so I don't have to be sure that all sides are square!). I just loved following through your entire process, and cannot say enough about how beautiful the end result is!
ReplyDeleteOh, I remember being there too... building that small rustic box :) There's always a starting point. Don't stop there, add a handle, maybe legs... Learning and upgrading your game! Though, I have to tell you, I couldn't have done this, without the tools. ;) Thank you so much for following and for your kind words! 💕
DeleteBeautiful! I'm impressed with your building skills as well as your design.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Nancy! I wish I could say that's my design, but nope. I followed the beautiful work done done here: http://bit.ly/BidIzsq -
DeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou have proven that there is NO home improvement project you cannot accomplish in a masterful and beautiful way! WOW!! The wall unit is so professional-looking, well, you ARE a professional at all this home improvement stuff! I hope you have time now to sit and enjoy it. I think I would sit and stare at it at least an hour every day if I have built something like that. It's cool that your repurposed the knobs as well. Plus, Louie is adorable!!
ReplyDeleteSue, Thanks so much for sticking with me throughout these crazy projects. And you just made my day!! If there's a project we're going to see and enjoy everyday, this is it. This is the room we use the most. Every time we're watching tv we get to stare a this entire unit!
DeleteLouie is happy making bigger debuts than this one on Instagram. :D
I was wondering how this project was coming. My husband (originally a shops teacher with his major in woods) was throughly impressed with your construction...and now we get to see the result. I think I would have sent out the doors, too. They can be such a pain, with warpage and just having to produce so many at home. Wonderful series of posts and results.
ReplyDeleteLooks absolutely amazing!!! I have been thinking about building some built-ins ever since you first showed this on IG...it makes such a huge difference!! Such an inspiring project! Absolutely beautiful!!!

Cristina,
ReplyDeleteAnother amazing huge project completed with stunning results! Thanks for the source for the doors. I hope to have my utility room redone this year and in the researching stage for what kind of doors to put on the cabinets.

Cristina, I swear, you could have your own TV program, you are that good! Each of your home projects turn out so fabulous. This custom design and finish is just beautiful (so are you!). Amazing!
ReplyDeleteThis is simply amazing! I’m so impressed that you did this all yourself. The built in storage is amazing and the overall look is fantastic. I really like the knobs you chose for them too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool work! Wow!

I love it. I can tell you are so much better at woodworking then me. You make it look easy, and I know it's definitely not!I have been thinking on redoing my kitchen so this post for cabinet doors is getting my mind spinning with possibilities.
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful!
These are incredible! What a beautiful space! I'm only repainting my kitchen cabinets and it feels like it's taking forever, I can't imagine building the cabinets and then painting them too! Way to go!

ReplyDeleteIf you had to purchase everything, do you have a cost estimate to do this build? I am looking into building a very similar set up but am having a hard time determining an estimate. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteCan you tell I'm getting caught up on all the posts?? I absolutely love the end result, Cristina! Your visioning is amazing! I wish I had some of that! It's a gift!
