No mantel? No problem guys. Learn how to make a cute holder where to hang those stockings in place!

For now, let me tell you how this project went for me...

I searched online for a lantern I could use for this project, and saw this one, but didn't like it much. The funny thing happened while I was at the Home Depot buying some other materials. I saw the same lantern there on the shelf, but now I was looking at it from a totally different perspective...

For the post I removed one from this rail my brother in law gave me. Can you imagine, he was going to get rid of it all. Of course I had to have it. I have something planned for it. ;)

The ball was removed with the miter saw and I also cut a chunky base out of a 2 x 10.

The post already had the little base, I simply added the other big piece to give it more stability.
The base of the lamp was traced on a piece of wood and cut out with the Jig Saw.
That wooden circle is the lamp's sitting spot.
Using a drill with a ½" drill bit a hole was done to pass a ½" round dowel. End caps were glued on both sides.
Two hooks (not shown), were attached to the post. Those, plus the dowel are the ones to hold the stockings.
I thought on giving the post a color treatment similar to the one on the lantern, but gas street lamps are usually black. I decided to go the black route, and went and spray painted the post black. Obviously, both finishes clashed. :/
So, I covered the "glass" part (the whole lamp is made out of plastic or a paste material) and painted the rest black.
I also gave the entire post and lantern a lightly spray of silver, trying to mimic a metal finish.
For attaching the lantern to the post I used Industrial Strength Velcro, screws would've damaged the plastic surface of the lamp, besides, the battery is located right there in the base. I made sure to attach the Velcro underneath the lantern, in pieces, so I can access the battery compartment at any time.
I love the vintage look of gas lanterns, decorated for Christmas I love them even more. I'm so happy to have my very own right here in my living room!
The best part is that my kids love it too! When they first discovered the music, they said: "Oh, cool!"
He is pushing the button to turn on the music or change the song. It has eight Christmas melodies.
Well, I think this is a project that's good for any room in your home!

I love this. How could this be altered to hold 6 stockings? Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt! You can make the dowel longer so it can hold more stockings. Mine can even hold four stockings there, plus the two from the hooks. You can also add more hooks, instead of two, install four.
