Hey there!
Don't you hate the moment... After pushing and pushing that soap dispenser trying to get the lasts bits of soap out of it, you realized no matter what, you just need to go and REFILL it?!
Well, like you and me, there are tons of people who hate that task. And perhaps, this post might encourage you to do it sooner rather than later. ;)
I saw this idea like six months ago on a Facebook post. I didn't follow the link (bad I know!). I took a mental snapshot and saved the picture in my mind. When the soap dispenser got empty this time, I once again, went online to try and find the source of my inspiration. Well, I really didn't remember who it was, but these posts HERE and HERE made almost the exact same thing.
Anyways, as much as I hate the task of refilling the small container every month, that wasn't the main reason why I wanted to get rid of that pesky soap dispenser.
Nope.
That disgusting picture was my main problem: The soap kept on leaking...
And LEAKING! >:(
So, my plan was to buy a plastic tube, bring it from the big container all the way up to the pump and... Problem solved. :)
Buuuut, Mr. RLC didn't approve of that plan because First, the soap could dry out, and Second, the kids could have knocked over the bottle.
He went ahead and retrofitted the container's cap for the plastic tubing to fit nicely through it.
He used needle nose pliers to twist and remove the little tip from the middle.
And, using a ¼" drill bit, the hole in the green cap was enlarged.
The plastic tubing was cut to size and connected to the pump. It had a snug fit, we didn't use tape to hold it in place. The other end, the one going to the soap container, got a slanted cut.
-Before buying the plastic tubing, make sure you know the size you need, better yet, bring the pump with you to the store.
The first time you try to get the soap from the pump takes a little while, but after that is just normal.
The mister did a spectacular job fitting the tubing through the cap!
I'm now feeling like I have an endless supply of soap... And no leaking!! :D

How smart!! I have to tell you, at our last house I ran out of soap and mindlessly refilled. Then it didn't seem like there was soap so I did it again..two or three times. Finally I realized the soap bottle had disconnected underneath and there was Dawn everywhere under the cabinet!! Ugh.

ReplyDeleteWe did this when we first had our kitchen redone! I bought a kit from ebay for about $15.00, it came with different size caps in case you want to change to a different scent. My bottles usually last for over 6 months and I get tired of the same scent after a while. I can't imagine having to fill the small bottles.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have problem with the soap draining back into the bottle? Mine does then I have to pump and pump for a while to get it to restart. Any solutions this problem?

DeleteIt happens when we don't use it for a few days, we have to prime it again for the soap to come back up.
DeleteI'm a little embarrassed to admit that I didn't realize the hole in the sink we've had covered with a sink stopper for over two years could be used for a soap dispenser! We have an older house, and when we moved in we just assumed that's where the sprayer was before the faucet with the pull down sprayer was installed. I don't think I've ever actually seen one installed in someone's kitchen. This was super easy. Took longer to pump the soap through the tube than it did to install the dispenser! :)
ReplyDeleteWe are in the process of getting new counters and a sink. I have to replace the faucet and my husband told me to also get the soap dispenser to match. I use this daily. I so am going to do this. I have to bend down with a flashlight to see if the bottle is filled enough without over filling. Great Idea! This proves you can teach an old dog new tricks. LOL Thanks for this.
ReplyDeleteI tried this but I kept losing the prime and every time I didn't use the dispenser for a few hours I'd have to pump for a LONG time to get it to work again. What did I do wrong?

ReplyDeleteI did this,but my pump isn't the best. So I now have put my soap container a shelf in the back of my cabinet,so the distance from pump to soap is much shorter. I also find that I need to make the soap a little less thick,so I dilute with a bit of water as needed. It helps. I love this! One less container to cut the clutter at the sink!

I tried this also but I kept losing the prime too. The soap doesn't remain in the tube as a continuous flow but keeps draining back down into the soap container. I also have to pump it a LONG time to get a drop of soap. I used 1/4" tube.
ReplyDeleteSomeone added a 1/4" inline check valve at the end of the tube to correct the loss of suction. I'm going to try that since the soap keeps draining back into the container.
