Bedroom Storage Solutions

I spent a good amount of time looking through so many beautiful pictures at Houzz, trying to get ideas for bookshelves or perhaps build-ins that I can incorporate in my master bedroom design.

They had to be narrow, the room is not that big, vertical storage would be the perfect plan, like in this next pic.

I also like the idea of having doors on the lower part of the shelves, that would hide those piles of plain copied papers and magazine cut-offs my husband loves to keep on the floor by the side of his night table. Ughhh, I simply dislike that!

Books and decorative items would go up on the top shelves and the doors would hide those not so pretty things.

But there is still one more thing I want to incorporate: a FIREPLACE.   Just like in this next picture.

That's a problem, I know! It is hard and expensive to bring a real fireplace into my design.  I'm settling on creating the look of a fireplace using one of those electric "fireplace" heaters.   Have you used one of those?   Any recommendations?

We don't want a t.v. in our room, the top part would be decorated as a regular mantel.  Wow, I love the color combination on this one.

This following picture was part of my white bedroom inspiration because it has all the elements I want, two narrow bookcases on each side of a fireplace.

Again, the fireplace has to be different, but believe me, any electric fireplace would look better than what the Mr. brings to the middle of the room on really cold winter days:

I'm already working on this and it's a challenge! :)

The building of the bookcases is already on.  Click HERE to see its progress.

  3. I am also planning some built in bookshelves. I've been looking on the internet for inspiration as well. I've got a 10' wall and won't have a TV or fireplace, just shelving and probably drawers on top of doors. I'm interested to see what you do with your built ins.

  4. Those are some great inspiration photos! We have an electric fireplace and I really like it. There are logs inside, so it mimics the look of an actual wood burning fireplace. It puts out a lot of heat!

  8. we actually ha ve a real fireplace in our bedroom, but we have sealed the opening and opted for an electric fireplace. Custom made built in mantel. We LOVE it SO SO MUCH. It's so easy to turn on/off, does not smell, you can adjust the heat and the "flame", and you can even turn it off with a remote. For us it was definitely the way to go.you can see how it looks in this posts of mine http://frugalaintcheap.blogspot.com/2012/06/coffee-table-without-coffee.html OR http://frugalaintcheap.blogspot.com/2012/04/let-there-be-light.html

  9. I wanted to do the same thing but decided there was no room. But you can get fire places that hang on the wall. Google it.

  13. We had the same issues, so we opted for an electrical fireplace. Since you are so talented, perhaps you can build the "box" and just buy the "insert". Here is a source with free shipping

  16. Cristina,

Love all your inspiration photos! You're so lucky to have a bedroom large enough to incorporate built in bookshelves! As one of your other readers suggested, maybe you could buy just the heater box and you could build the mantel and book shelves around it. It will be exciting to see what you come up with. Also, check into infrared heater boxes. We got one for our basement and it really adds a nice warm heat for the room.

  23. Hola Christina!
Have a great week.

  24. Really fantastic ideas! I have been toying with the idea of built-ins on one wall of our living room. My neighbor and I both have a duraflame insert for our fireplaces and LOVE them. Probably not the most design forward thing, but it really warms up the main living areas in our old drafty homes and actually doesn't look too bad. Here's the link for the ones we bought.

  34. I love fireplaces - so pretty and so homey! And doors are such a big must for me - I need some place to hide the un-pretty things. And I always have to assign my husband a junk drawer so he can have his own space to dump stuff, haha.

  35. I love the thought of a fireplace but have heard the electric ones make a lot of noise. How about one of those propane fireplaces, uses a small propane take, so its real fire?!
I'm sure whatever you come up with will be amazing!

  37. Make your man feel even MORE speshul when you tell him that the "proper name" for that heater is a BARN HEATER--more specificaly a MILK ROOM HEATER. Out here in farm country where it sometimes gets to 40 BELOW ZERO we use them for all parts of the house (and barn and sheds and---) but that is the technical function--they are rugged and will last for years under harsh conditions. Maybe you shouldn't share that last part!

You can always have the LOOK of built in shelves--and who DOESN'T want built ins? And who can AFFORD built ins??? LOL! By using the tall "wood" book cases and edging them out in molding. I have done this with lightweight pre-pressed molding---looks good. On the top use a "heavier" detail molding and on the sides use either a narrow shape or a wider one if you have two cases butted up against one another--you can fasten then together and to the wall for safety and sturdyness and to hide the gap. Paint the back of the shelves or paper them if you like----

For the center area you can add the same style or different cabinets. We are going to be doing this in our LR now that a large piece of family furniture is moving on to a grown kids house--YAY!!!---and we are going to "retire" the "Entertainment Center" now that we don't NEED an entire huge piece of furniture to house a TV we can hang on the wall. For the record this is the FIRST and ONLY time my HUSBAND has mentioned going to IKEA. Ever. And we live 5 HOURS away from IKEA. We are going to "flank" the TV with tall cabs and use either smaller versions below or a "cube" system for storage and display.

When I LOOKED at the amount of SPACE the "Entertainment Center" takes UP and the amount of stuff that is ACTUALLY on there--that "reads" as complete chaos and clutter but is NOT---I was stunned to see that there is relatively little up there but the whole thing is so massive--right now there is a 46" TV in there! And a tower of DVD's on the side of THAT!!!!---that it makes the whole end of the room look cramped. Time to move on!!!

I am thinking of two ideas for the bottoms--either tension rods and curtains or there are swing out curtain rods--for windows that swing in or out--and you can add a PANEL of fabric or a lightweight "solid" material to this for the LOOK of doors. OR you could just add finished panels and hinges! Using a plain panel that you then cut some molding or use a pre-made rondel or other detail for the doors would save tons and allow you to match or complement your room. Endless!!!!

  38. Decisions, decisions. I have wanted built-in book shelves for
ever (actually, I'd love a little library room) - but till I get a place of my own I will have to just look at other peoples and dream a whole lot!
Enjoy figuring it out and planning the process.

  39. We have an electric fireplace and it is wonderful. Very warm and perfect for a bedroom. Ours has the timer, so you can climb in bed, get cozy and when you are asleep it shuts off. They are very affordable. Can't wait to see the makeover. You always wow me! Thank you for joining me at Home Sweet Home!
